The Meaning Behind "Maruyoshi"
A name shaped by craft, guided by heart.
At Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware, our name reflects not only the philosophy of our craftsmanship, but also the spirit of our founder, Yoshio Kosaka.
When we explore the meaning behind each character of “Maruyoshi,” a deeper connection between objects and intentions begins to take shape.
The character “嘉 (Yoshi)” is taken from our founder’s given name, Yoshio. Traditionally, “嘉” conveys meanings such as “goodness” and “joy,” and has long been regarded as an auspicious symbol in Japanese culture.
The other half of our name, “丸 (Maru)”, represents a form that Yoshio cherished deeply — the circle.
Round bowls, round trays, round dishes. There is a gentle warmth in these soft curves, as if the object itself is embracing the hand that holds it.
But for Yoshio, the meaning of “Maru” went beyond physical form.
It reflected his way of living: to approach things harmoniously, to foster peace and completeness in both relationships and work.
Together, these two characters became our name — Maruyoshi.
It is more than a title.
It is a symbol of the relationship between people and craftsmanship, a reflection of the aesthetic ideals held by those who create.
Even today, at Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware, we carry forward the spirit embedded in “Maru” and “Yoshi,” dedicating ourselves to thoughtful, honest work each day.
Within each circular form lies both softness and strength.
With the heart of Yoshio as our guide, we hope to continue crafting lacquerware that brings harmony into everyday life.
